Hope for the Road Ahead

One more note on what's coming up — and the one thing you must resist.

Has your doctor's office ever called you and said the dreaded words: "We need to discuss your test results in the office."

NO! Just tell me now! Bad news, good news… who cares! Just tell me now so I don't have to sit and wait until I'm in the office!

Uncertainty is simply one of the worst possible mental states for a human being. We can't stand it! Even if those test results are bad… somehow it feels better to say "well, at least I know."

Here's the issue: everything in you will want to close the loop as you go on this journey. You must resist.

We've done it and seen it plenty as we've walked alongside people. Early on, little statements will slip out…

  • "It runs in my family."
  • "I had a terrible childhood, so it makes sense."
  • "Everything comes back to fear, you know? That's the real problem for all of us."
  • "We're all sinners, right? Can't get around that."
  • "Well, I am an Enneagram ___ … so…"

As you move forward, you have to see each of these for what they truly are: desperate attempts to "close the loop." Kill the ambiguity. Resolve the tension and discomfort.

From here on out, you can no longer assume you know what's going on.

Don't assume you understand your own motives.

Don't assume you know why you do what you do.

Don't. Assume. Anything.

You're going to need that tension and discomfort to propel you down the yellow brick road to what's really holding your heart captive.

You've got this 💪
